What To Wear After Giving Birth

After giving birth new moms need to have the right clothes. This is not only for comfort but also for function.

After delivery, you do not have to wear a hospital gown. You can wear your own clothes.

This can make a big difference in how you feel after birth because it can help you feel more like yourself.

Below, we go over your postpartum clothing options in greater detail.

What Size Will You Wear After Giving Birth?

This is a frequently asked question, and there is no simple answer.

Every woman’s body is different, and it depends on how much weight you gained during pregnancy.

We recommend starting with your 3rd-trimester pregnancy size or one size up.

While your body begins to drop the pregnancy weight, your pregnancy maternity clothes should suffice.

Maternity clothing has come a long way since the days of wearing baggy T-shirts and jeans. Today, you’ll find stylish maternity outfits that fit perfectly.

If you are breastfeeding, you may want to size up, even more, to accommodate for breast growth.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will probably be bloated and have some swelling after delivery, so don’t expect your clothes to fit the same way they did before you gave birth.

Be patient with your body as it goes through these changes- it will take some time to get back to your pre-pregnancy size.

In the meantime, focus on finding clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good about yourself.

Postpartum Hospital Clothes

After you’ve given birth, it’s important to have the right clothes. You don’t want to be wearing a hospital gown after delivery.

Again, comfort is key here.

You may be tempted to put on a pair of skinny jeans and high heels, but we recommend opting for something a little more relaxed.

Here is what to wear after giving birth in hospital.

1. Postpartum Belly Bands/Wraps

Postpartum belly bands/wraps are a postpartum necessity.

If you’re wondering what to wear after giving birth for your stomach, the Bengkung belly wrap is it!

They help to support your belly, waist, and hips as your body heals and changes after baby.

Most postpartum belly bands are made of comfortable, stretchy material and have Velcro closures. This makes them adjustable to your post-baby body.

2. Nursing Outfits for Hospital

Nursing tanks and bras are a must-have for any nursing mom. They provide support and coverage while still allowing easy access to nursing.

Look for nursing tanks that are cozy and have built-in support. Nursing bras should also be comfortable with adjustable straps.

A Kindred Bravely bra is a must-have. The nursing bras they sell are among the best available.

I know from personal experience that the majority of nursing bras on Amazon don’t last very long, especially if you have larger breasts.

Button-down PJs or shirts are another great option for nursing moms. They provide easy access to nursing while still looking put together.

Breast pads are another must-have for nursing moms. They will help to absorb any leaks and keep your clothes dry.

4. Postpartum Pants

Postpartum pants are necessary for any postpartum wardrobe. They should be cozy, supportive, and flattering.

Look for postpartum pants with a high waistband like this one that can be worn over a postpartum belly band.

Choose a dark color since you’ll still be bleeding a lot, and you don’t want the blood to easily show through.

Maternity yoga pants, sweats, or PJ pants are great options for postpartum pants.

5. Nightgowns

A cozy nightgown or sleepwear is a postpartum essential. You will be spending a lot of time in bed, so you want to be comfortable.

Look for a nightgown or sleepwear that is loose and flowy. You may also want to consider a nightgown with built-in nursing bra support.

6. Loose Shirts

A loose-fitting shirt is a postpartum must-have. It will be comfy to wear, and you can nurse in it easily.

Tunic tops, kimonos, and button-down shirts are all great options for postpartum shirts.

Choose a shirt that is flattering and makes you feel good about yourself.

7. Maxi Dress or Skirt

You can also try a maxi dress or skirt– they are comfortable and stylish, and you can dress them up or down depending on how you feel like.

They are a perfect post-baby hospital outfit.

8. Undies

After birth, you’ll like to wear comfortable underwear with good coverage.

Granny panties are a great option.

They may not be the most stylish, but they will feel the best. Choose a dark color so that any bleeding will not show through.

9. Robes

A postpartum robe is super comfortable, and you can nurse in it easily.

A robe is also great for post-birth bathroom trips. You can put it on quickly and not have to worry about getting fully dressed.

10. Hair Bands

You will want to have a few hair bands on hand to help keep your hair out of your face. After delivery, you will probably be sweating a lot, and your hair will get in the way.

11. Grippy Socks

Slippers are another important hospital item for mom. You will be spending a lot of time in your hospital room, and your feet should be as comfortable as possible.

Look for slippers that are soft and have good traction. You may also want to consider getting a pair with an adjustable strap so they will stay on your feet.

13. Shoes

When it comes to shoes, flats are your best friend. They will be much more comfortable than heels.

If you must wear heels, make sure they are low and stable so you don’t risk falling or injuring yourself.

Going Home Outfit For Mom After C-Section (+ Summer and Winter Choices)

High-waisted sweat pants are a must-have for C-Section new moms

Ensure that your postpartum attire is as cozy as possible if you had a c-section.

You will be sore and tender, especially around your abdomen, so you don’t wear anything that presses on that area of your body.

Pajamas or sweatpants are a great option for a post-C-Section outfit since they are loose-fitting around your waist.

The best type of pajamas for post-C-Section are ones with a high waist so they don’t press on your abdomen.

You may also consider getting a pair of postpartum shorts to wear under your pajamas or sweatpants for extra support.

For Summer and Winter

In the summer, a loose sundress can be a great post-C-Section outfit because it doesn’t touch your abdomen.

In the winter, a cozy sweater or hoodie and comfy loose pants are great post C-Section clothes for mom.

The Lululemon Align is one of the best leggings for C-Section moms. They are high waist, soft and stretchy.

Another option is compression leggings

These leggings are great post-C-Section because they provide support and compression to your abdomen. They also have a high waist so they don’t press on your incision area.

A great brand to look into after a C-Section is Lululemon.

They have a pair of leggings called Lululemon Align that don’t squeeze your body too tight which makes them perfect for after a c-section.

Plus, they are really supportive and hold well. I would strongly recommend these if they are within your budget.

These underbelly postpartum panties are perfect for a c-sec mom since they won’t irritate c-section scars

The best ideas for undies after a c-section are high-waisted panties that don’t press on your incision area.

Again, dark colors are best so any postpartum bleeding doesn’t show through.

When Can You Wear Normal Clothes After C-Section?

Moms may be wondering when they can wear normal clothes again after a c-section. It’s important to listen to your body and not try to push yourself too soon.

Every mom and every c-section is different, so there is no set time frame for when you can start wearing normal clothes again.

It’s important to wait until your incision has healed and you are feeling up to getting dressed in normal clothes.
