Biblical Encouragement for New Moms
I pray that these words encourage you wherever you are in your new mommy journey.
All scriptures below are from the New International Version unless stated otherwise.
GRATITUDE
Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words
2 Corinthians 9:15
Gratitude. There really always is something to be thankful for.
For your baby. For getting to experience motherhood. For a safe delivery and a healthy baby.
God is good!
Even if you did not have the birth of your dreams (and I know this can be hard on moms), try to focus on the positives. If you look hard, you’ll find it!
Gratitude for what you have.
Life. Health. And a baby!
Thank God.
There truly is always something to be grateful for!
HELP
I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2
Being a new mom in a pandemic is HARD!
The truth is, you will not have as much support as you would have had in “normal” times.
Your family and friends can’t come to visit as often as they would like or in some other parts of the world, they can’t come to visit at all! It’s a very strict lockdown!
You’ve probably had to rely on online mom groups for support because all your local mom groups have been canceled or put on hold.
It’s tough!
But God not only understands, He says He will HELP you. You are NOT ALONE!
This scripture above was such an encouragement to me as a mom when I was about to give birth to my second child.
I was far from family, my mother couldn’t come and I had to do “it” alone. I kept praying with this verse. Because with a 14-month-old and a newborn, I knew I needed all the help, I could get.
Thankfully, God helped me!
Yes, there were many rough days but there were many more happy days. My husband and I even grew closer during this time.
Most importantly, the work wasn’t more than I could bear.
So, moms, lean on God. Ask Him for help and let this scripture encourage your hearts.
PAIN
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us
Romans 8:18
No one likes the word “suffering”. It connotes all sorts of negative things.
To be quite honest, I never really fancied this scripture because of that word. But Jesus didn’t promise us a pain-free life.
Though, He did encourage us that He has overcome the world and we should take courage.
As a new mom, how is this relevant to you?
The sleepless nights, breastfeeding pain (no one told you how hard breastfeeding could be), the colicky baby that just won’t be soothed no matter what you do.
Add to this your recovering body. It is A LOT! Especially for first-time mothers.
One verse that brings comfort is the one above. Know that it will all be worth it! And this suffering is temporary!
You will sleep well again (maybe after a few years, lol). The breastfeeding pain will stop and the colicky baby will be soothed.
HEALING
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
Recovering from childbirth is a process and some mothers recover faster than others.
This could be based on several different factors like the type of birth you had, stress after labor and delivery, etc.
This scripture is a reminder that your healing has been perfected eons ago when Christ died on the cross.
You will heal and recover no matter the situation. As I write this, I’m believing God and trusting Him that this is my reality too as I’m recovering from the virus.
No matter, the health plot twist, hold God to His Word and He won’t put you to shame!
UNCERTAINTY
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose
Romans 8:28
Or are you a new mom and your baby is in the NICU? Uncertainty about the future, fear and worry can fill your heart.
It’s perfectly understandable.
I love love love this scripture. It’s the perfect verse for you as a new mother in this situation. Let it bring you peace and comfort.
Knowing that God is working behind the scenes. And everything will work out to favour you! It is well!
OVERWHELMED AND STRESSED
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
Psalm 55:22
The demands of new motherhood can cause a lot of stress and overwhelm.
Dealing with the demands of a new baby, sleep deprivation and fluctuating hormones is a LOT!
If you find yourself in this place, try not to burden yourself. Cast your cares on God.
He can handle it!
I do recognize that sometimes you might need to seek medical help if you develop postpartum depression. I’m not talking about that here.
I’m referring to the new mom overwhelm that invariably all new mothers feel. Casting whatever is stressing and overwhelming you on God can help you feel better and lift that burden. Better still, God can tell you what to do to feel better!
FEAR AND WORRY
Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
Philippians 4:6-7 (THE MESSAGE)
Worry and new motherhood are almost synonymous.
As new moms, we worry about everything from is my baby breathing to what’s this new rash on my baby’s face?
While, I’m not discounting these worries, I’ve had my fair share of them and still do. I want to remind you that worrying robs you of peace!
And many times, our fears are unfounded!
This is a lesson I’m still learning if I’m being honest.
One bible verse that has helped me to worry less in recent weeks is the one where Paul wrote to the Philippian Church (quoted above).
The Message version brings it home for me. Instead of worrying, pray!
Such a simple but powerful statement.
Like my husband told me this morning, instead of worrying about every little rash or scratch on your baby, why not ask God to pinpoint to you the important signs you need to take a closer look at.
That way you don’t become a worrier.
Better still, trust God, His angels, and the Holy Spirit to protect your little one, and keep him safe and far from harm.
